A local's guide to Lake Bryan: fishing, boating, and trails

7 min read

Lake Bryan is the Brazos Valley's favorite open-water escape — a 829-acre reservoir just minutes from downtown Bryan and Texas A&M. Whether you're here to fish, paddle, ride the trails, or just watch the sun go down, here's the local's rundown.

Fishing on Lake Bryan

Lake Bryan is best known for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. The coves on the west shore tend to hold bass year-round; the deeper water near the dam is the catfish spot once summer settles in.

A Texas freshwater fishing license is required for anyone 17 or older. Bank fishing is free with the day-use entry; bring sunscreen — shade is limited on the points.

Boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding

There's a public boat ramp at the main park entrance, and the lake is large enough for waterskiing and wakeboarding without feeling crowded on weekdays. Kayaks and paddleboards do best in the early morning before the wind picks up.

Rentals are available seasonally from local outfitters in Bryan if you don't have your own gear.

Trails and biking

Lake Bryan is home to one of the best mountain bike trail systems in central Texas — roughly 20 miles of singletrack maintained by the Brazos Valley Mountain Bike Association, ranging from beginner loops to technical rock gardens.

Hikers and trail runners are welcome on the same network; just yield to bikes coming downhill.

When to go

Spring and fall are ideal — mild temperatures, low humidity, and active fish. Summer is busy on weekends but quiet on weekday mornings. The park typically opens at sunrise and closes at sunset; check current hours before you head out.
